DaaS stands for Drone as a Service. It covers work in commercial drone operations. This includes flying drones for clients, collecting aerial data, and processing the results.

DaaS spans many use cases. These include farming, building inspections, land surveys, real estate, emergency response, deliveries, media, and environmental work.

Who This Domain Is For

The DaaS domain is for people who work with drones in a commercial setting. This includes:

• Drone pilots and flight operators.
• People who manage drone fleets for clients.
• Data processing staff who work with aerial images and scans.
• People in companies that offer drone services to other businesses.
• Professionals who plan or oversee drone-based projects.

DaaS also fits people moving into the drone sector from related fields. Aviation, surveying, IT, agriculture, and environmental science are common starting points.

What the DaaS Sector Looks Like

The DaaS sector has grown fast. It started in military and hobby use. Now it is a broad commercial industry.

The service model is simple. A client needs aerial data, images, or deliveries. A DaaS provider does the flying, captures the data, and delivers the results. The client does not need to own drones or hold pilot licences.

The market includes small operators, large fleet companies, data firms, and full-service providers. Some focus on one area like farming. Others serve many sectors.

Regulations play a big role. In Canada, Transport Canada sets the rules for all drone flights. Operators need a pilot certificate. The type of certificate depends on where and how they fly.

Privacy law also applies. Drones can capture images of people and private places. Operators must follow federal and provincial privacy rules.

Safety is central to the culture. The DaaS sector takes its safety standards from aviation. Pre-flight checks, risk plans, and standard procedures are required, not optional.

The 13 Bands in DaaS

DEX offers 13 bands across four certification levels. Each band describes a scope of work. All 13 are available in the DaaS domain.

DEX-A has one band:

• Associate DaaS -- Ready to start work and contribute under guidance.

DEX-P has four bands:

• Specialist DaaS -- Works on their own within a defined area.
• Practitioner DaaS -- A go-to person in the field. Handles complex work.
• Lead Expert DaaS -- Shapes how work is done. Guides teams without managing people.
• Strategist DaaS -- Thinks in systems. Shapes strategy. Top of the non-management track.

DEX-M has four bands:

• Team Leader DaaS -- Leads a single team.
• Group Manager DaaS -- Leads multiple teams or a department.
• Area Director DaaS -- Manages managers across functions.
• Division Head DaaS -- Leads at corporate-wide scope. Top of the management track.

DEX-PF has four bands:

• Regional DaaS -- Executive leadership at a city or regional level.
• National DaaS -- Leads across an entire country.
• Cross-Border DaaS -- Leads across more than one country.
• Global DaaS -- Leads worldwide operations. The highest band in the system.

A person does not need to start at the bottom. They may attempt the band that matches their current readiness.

What Certification in DaaS Means

A DEX credential in DaaS tells employers what a person has been assessed as ready to do. It describes a scope of work, not a body of knowledge.

The credential is portable. It does not expire when a person changes jobs, moves to a new city, or shifts into a different part of the sector. It stays valid for 24 months from the date the person passes.

Every DEX-certified holder appears in a public registry. Any employer can look up a holder by name. They can see the holder's level, band, domain, and current status. No login is needed. No fee is charged.

How the Assessment Works

Each assessment has 90 questions. The time limit is 90 minutes. Assessments are online and proctored.

Results are given right away. If a person does not pass, they may retake the assessment. Retakes are charged at 50% of the standard assessment fee.
