Canada has three levels of government. Each level has its own duties, funding, and rules. The public service is large and varied. It includes policy staff, front-line workers, managers, and leaders.

The Government domain is for people who work in or plan to enter the public sector. This includes:

What the Government Sector Looks Like

Government work happens under public scrutiny. Decisions must be fair, traceable, and open to review. Public servants serve the public interest, not a private one.

Rules shape every part of the work. Financial rules govern spending. Privacy laws protect personal data. Procurement rules keep buying fair and open. In federal bodies, services must be offered in both English and French.

The sector is changing. Digital services are replacing paper ones. Open data is growing. Governments are hiring for new skills in areas like technology, data, and cybersecurity. Many experienced staff are retiring. New people are needed.

The 13 Bands in Government

DEX offers 13 bands across four certification levels. Each band describes a scope of work. All 13 are available in the Government domain.

DEX-A has one band:

• Associate Government -- Ready to start work and contribute under guidance.

DEX-P has four bands:

• Specialist Government -- Works on their own within a defined area.
• Practitioner Government -- A go-to person in their field. Handles complex work.
• Lead Expert Government -- Shapes how work is done. Guides teams without managing people.
• Strategist Government -- Thinks in systems. Shapes strategy. Top of the non-management track.

DEX-M has four bands:

• Team Leader Government -- Leads a single team.
• Group Manager Government -- Leads multiple teams or a department.
• Area Director Government -- Manages managers across functions.
• Division Head Government -- Leads at corporate-wide scope. Top of the management track.

DEX-PF has four bands:

• Regional Government -- Executive leadership at a city or regional level.
• National Government -- Leads across an entire country.
• Cross-Border Government -- Leads across more than one country.
• Global Government -- Leads worldwide operations. The highest band in the system.

A person does not need to start at the bottom. They may attempt the band that matches their current readiness.

What Certification in Government Means

A DEX credential in Government tells employers what a person has been assessed as ready to do. It describes a scope of work, not a body of knowledge.

Government professionals often move between departments, agencies, and levels of government. The credential is portable. It does not expire when a person changes roles, moves to a new agency, or shifts to a different level of government. It stays valid for 24 months from the date the person passes.

Every DEX-certified holder appears in a public registry. Any employer can look up a holder by name. They can see the holder's level, band, domain, and current status. No login is needed. No fee is charged.

How the Assessment Works

Each assessment has 90 questions. The time limit is 90 minutes. Assessments are online and proctored.

Results are given right away. If a person does not pass, they may retake the assessment. Retakes are charged at 50% of the standard assessment fee.

Why Government Matters as a Domain

Government touches every part of daily life. Roads, schools, health care, and public safety all depend on the people who run public systems. These roles call for clear thinking, sound judgment, and careful coordination.

DEX certification in Government gives a clear signal of readiness. It shows what scope of work a person can handle. It works whether the person is a policy analyst, a program manager, or a deputy minister.

The credential does not replace any government-specific qualification or security clearance. It adds a layer that those credentials were not built to provide: a structured, level-based signal of professional readiness.
