What is DEX?

DEX is a professional certification assessed by an outside body. It certifies that a professional meets the readiness standard at a defined scope of responsibility. There are four certification levels: DEX-A, DEX-P, DEX-M, and DEX-PF. DEX applies across industries and career paths. It is not a course. It is not a membership club. It is a certification institution for persons.

Is DEX a course?

No. DEX does not deliver training or instruction. It certifies whether a professional meets the readiness standard at the chosen certification level. Study resources are available to support preparation. Those resources are not the product. The product is the assessed certification.

Is DEX tied to one industry?

No. The four DEX certification levels describe scope of professional responsibility at a defined band within a domain. Geographic portability is preserved: the same credential is recognised across employers and locations within a domain. Domain portability is not assumed: moving between domains may require separate credentials.

Who is DEX for?

DEX is for working professionals across all industries and career stages. Any professional who holds or is moving toward a role at the scope described by one of the four certification levels may apply. There is no restriction by sector, employer size, or geography.

Why would someone get DEX?

DEX provides a structured, verifiable signal of professional readiness that a CV cannot provide on its own. The certification is externally assessed. It is tied to a defined scope of responsibility. Employers and professionals can use it to establish a clearer, more objective basis for evaluating readiness at a given level.

How is DEX different from a course certificate?

A course certificate confirms that a person attended or completed a programme. DEX certifies readiness through external assessment. The distinction is signal quality. Course completion shows that a person studied content. DEX certification shows that a person demonstrated readiness at a defined scope of professional responsibility through assessed performance.

Choosing the Right Level

What are the four levels?

DEX-A (Associate Certification): structured execution and coordination under supervision. DEX-P (Professional Certification): specialist practice with domain ownership. DEX-M (Management Certification): team leadership and systems oversight at a multi-function level. DEX-PF (Portfolio Certification): portfolio prioritisation and accountability for enterprise-level outcomes. Each level describes a scope of professional responsibility.

Which level is right for me?

Choose the level that matches the scope of the role held or being sought. DEX-A suits roles focused on execution and coordination under supervision. DEX-P suits specialist or practitioner roles with domain ownership. DEX-M suits roles that involve leading teams or overseeing systems across functions. DEX-PF suits roles with accountability for portfolio or enterprise outcomes.

Can I skip levels?

Yes. There are no prerequisites. Any certification level may be attempted without holding a lower-level certificate first. Each level is open to any applicant who meets the eligibility criteria for that level.

Do I need a previous DEX certification before applying to a higher one?

No. DEX certifications are not stacked prerequisites. Each level is open to any applicant who meets the eligibility criteria for that level. A prior DEX certification is not required.

What if I am not sure which level fits me?

Review the level descriptions on the certification page. Each description outlines the scope of responsibility associated with that level. Match the description to the actual responsibilities held in a current or target role. The scope of day-to-day accountability is the most reliable guide.

Does DEX have sub-levels within each certification?

Yes. Each of the four DEX certifications includes multiple bands. DEX-A includes the Associate band. DEX-P includes Specialist, Practitioner, Lead Expert, and Strategist bands. DEX-M includes Team Leader, Group Manager, Area Director, and Division Head bands. DEX-PF includes Regional, National, Borders, and Global bands. The band is always stated on the credential alongside the domain.

Eligibility

What do I need for DEX-A?

DEX-A is the entry-level certification. It is open to professionals working in coordination, execution, or operational support roles under supervision. No minimum years of experience are specified at this level. Applicants should review the DEX-A eligibility criteria on the certification page for the full requirements.

What do I need for DEX-P?

DEX-P requires demonstrated experience working as a specialist or practitioner with domain ownership and without continuous oversight from a senior level. Applicants should review the DEX-P eligibility criteria on the certification page for the full requirements.

What do I need for DEX-M?

DEX-M requires demonstrated experience leading teams or overseeing systems at a multi-function level. Applicants should review the DEX-M eligibility criteria on the certification page for the full requirements.

What do I need for DEX-PF?

DEX-PF requires demonstrated experience at the portfolio or enterprise level, with accountability for cross-organisational outcomes. This includes experience with strategic prioritisation and responsibility for results across multiple functions or business units. Applicants should review the DEX-PF eligibility criteria on the certification page for the full requirements.

What counts as work experience?

Paid employment in a role that required the responsibilities associated with the chosen certification level counts as work experience. Demonstrated accountability for outcomes is the relevant measure, not job title or employer size. The assessors look at whether the scope of actual work matches the scope defined for that certification level.

Do I need a degree?

No. DEX does not require a post-secondary degree. Eligibility is based on professional experience and demonstrated readiness at the chosen level. Educational background is not a gatekeeping factor.

The Assessment

What is the assessment format?

The assessment is specific to the band and domain selected. It is completed online in a proctored session. Each applicant completes the assessment on their own.

What does the assessment measure?

The assessment measures readiness across multiple dimensions of professional practice. The emphasis placed on each dimension shifts by level. DEX-A places greater emphasis on execution-related dimensions. DEX-PF places greater emphasis on strategic and portfolio-level dimensions. The full emphasis distribution is published separately and not listed here.

Is the assessment based on memorisation only?

No. Recall is one part of the assessment. Application, judgement, and situational reasoning make up a significant portion of the assessment. Memorisation alone is not sufficient to meet the minimum readiness standard.

Is the assessment hard?

The assessment is designed to distinguish those who have met the minimum readiness standard from those who have not. Practical experience in the relevant role is the strongest predictor of readiness. Preparation using the study guide increases familiarity with the type of reasoning assessed.

How should I prepare?

Review the study guide for the chosen certification level and domain. Apply the concepts covered in current work. Focus on situational reasoning and judgement, not only factual recall. Practical experience in a role at the relevant scope is the most effective preparation.

Do I need the study guide to pass?

No. The study guide is optional. It is a preparation resource, not a requirement for sitting the assessment. Some applicants meet the readiness standard without using the study guide. Practical experience in the relevant role is also a valid form of preparation.

If You Do Not Pass

What happens if I do not pass?

The result indicates that the minimum readiness standard at that certification level was not demonstrated at this time. There is no mandatory waiting period before scheduling a retake. A retake may be booked after further preparation. The study guide is recommended before attempting the assessment again.

What are the retake fees?

DEX-A: $10 member / $60 non-member. DEX-P: $50 member / $100 non-member. DEX-M: $100 member / $150 non-member. DEX-PF Regional: $125 member / $175 non-member. DEX-PF National: $150 member / $200 non-member. DEX-PF Borders: $175 member / $225 non-member. DEX-PF Global: $200 member / $250 non-member.

Do I have to pay the full assessment price again if I fail?

No. Retakes are priced at 50% of the applicable assessment fee. Member and non-member retake rates both apply at 50% of the corresponding assessment fee. Each retake uses a different set of assessment items.

Pricing

How much does certification cost?

DEX-A: $20 member / $119 non-member. DEX-P: $100 member / $199 non-member. DEX-M: $200 member / $299 non-member. DEX-PF Regional: $250 member / $349 non-member. DEX-PF National: $300 member / $399 non-member. DEX-PF Borders: $350 member / $449 non-member. DEX-PF Global: $400 member / $499 non-member. Members save $99 on every assessment.

What are the bundle prices?

Dex Associate Bundle: $109. Dex Professional Bundle: $189. Dex Management Bundle: $289. Dex Regional Bundle: $339. Dex National Bundle: $389. Dex Borders Bundle: $439. Dex Global Bundle: $489. Each bundle includes annual membership, the member assessment price, and the study guide at $0.

Is membership worth it?

Membership costs $89 per year. Members save $99 on each assessment at every certification level. The study guide is included with membership at no additional cost. For any professional planning to certify or recertify, the savings on the assessment alone exceed the annual membership cost.

Membership

Is membership required?

No. The DEX assessment is open to both members and non-members. Membership is optional. Non-members pay the non-member assessment fee. Members pay the member assessment fee, which is $99 less at every certification level.

Does membership certify me?

No. Certification requires passing the assessed examination. Membership does not confer certified status. A member who has not completed and passed a DEX assessment is not a certified DEX credential holder. These are separate and distinct.

What does membership include?

Membership includes member pricing on all DEX assessments, which saves $99 per assessment at every certification level. Membership also includes access to the DEX study guide at no additional cost. Members receive updates and resources through the member channel.

What does membership not include?

Membership does not include certification. A membership subscription does not make a person a certified DEX credential holder. Membership does not guarantee job placement. Membership does not guarantee a salary outcome. Membership does not confer professional status.

Can I become a member first and take the assessment later?

Yes. Membership and certification are separate processes. There is no required sequence. A person may join as a member and take the assessment at any time after joining. There is no waiting period.

Renewal

How long does certification last?

DEX certifications are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. After 12 months, a renewal assessment is required to maintain Active status.

What happens at renewal?

A renewal assessment is completed at the end of the 12-month period. The assessment confirms that the minimum readiness standard at that certification level is still met. Member pricing applies to renewal assessments. Renewal uses the same externally assessed format as the original assessment.

What if I cannot afford renewal right away?

Hardship support may be available on application. Contact the support team for details. Provisions are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Hardship pricing is not a standard publicly listed option.

Verification

How can someone verify a DEX credential?

The credential holder provides a unique credential code to the verifier. The verifier enters that code into the DEX public registry to confirm the credential status. The registry is code-based. Name-based search is not available. The credential holder controls who receives the code.

What information appears in the registry?

The registry displays the credential holder's name, the certification level, the assessment date, and the current status. Status values are: Active, Expired, Suspended, or Revoked. Assessment scores are not displayed in the registry.

Can DEX be used outside Canada?

DEX is headquartered in Canada. The assessment and certification processes are accessible to professionals in any country. There is no geographic restriction on who may apply or sit the assessment.

Will DEX guarantee me a job?

No. DEX certifies readiness at a defined scope of professional responsibility. It is not a job placement service. DEX does not guarantee employment. DEX does not guarantee a salary outcome. The certification provides a verifiable signal of readiness. Employment decisions rest with employers.

Study Guide

What is the study guide?

The study guide is a web-based preparation resource. It is organised in three layers: foundational concepts, application scenarios, and level-specific content. It is not a course. It does not replicate the assessment. It prepares applicants for the type of reasoning and judgement assessed at each certification level.

How much does the study guide cost?

The study guide costs $49 as a standalone purchase. It is included with a DEX membership at no additional cost. Members access the study guide through their membership without paying the standalone price.

Questions Many Buyers Still Need Answered

Can I apply if my job title does not match the level name?

Yes. Eligibility is based on the scope of responsibilities held, not on job title. Many professionals hold titles that do not align directly with DEX level names. What matters is whether the actual work performed matches the scope of professional responsibility defined for the chosen level.

Can freelance or self-employed experience count?

Yes. Work experience from freelance or self-employed roles counts if it demonstrates the responsibilities associated with the chosen certification level. Accountability for outcomes is the relevant factor. The form of employment is not the deciding criterion.

Can volunteer experience count?

Yes, if the volunteer role involved genuine responsibilities at the scope of the chosen certification level. The key question is whether the role required the same type of accountability and decision-making described in the level criteria.

Can I take DEX if I studied outside Canada?

Yes. DEX is open to professionals worldwide regardless of where they studied or where they are currently based. There are no restrictions based on country of education or residency.

Is DEX a government licence or regulated profession credential?

No. DEX is a professional certification assessed by an outside body. It is not a government licence. It is not a regulated profession requirement. It is an externally assessed signal of professional readiness at a defined scope of responsibility.

Do I have to renew forever?

Certification renewal is required every 12 months to maintain Active status. If a renewal assessment is not completed by the expiry date, the certification moves to Expired status. Renewal is required for anyone who wishes to maintain a current Active certification.

What happens if my certification expires?

The certification moves to Expired status. An Expired certification is no longer current. A renewal assessment is required to return the certification to Active status. The registry will show Expired until the renewal assessment is passed.

Can anyone see my score?

No. Assessment scores are not displayed in the registry. Scores are not shared with third parties. The registry shows certification status only: Active, Expired, Suspended, or Revoked.

Can I prepare on my own?

Yes. Applicants may prepare using any resources available to them. The DEX study guide is one option. Practical experience in a role at the relevant scope is also a form of preparation. There is no mandatory preparation course or programme required before sitting the assessment.
